Should I Wear Jewelry For My Headshots?

Wearing jewelry can elevate your headshot by adding additional detail and texture to the image, and injecting a little bit of your unique personality! However, it is important to be intentional when selecting jewelry for your headshot session. You want to wear pieces that are not too busy and will complement and not distract from your natural features. If you are only getting a headshot, make sure the pendant(s) are above where the crop of the photo is, so a tighter necklace is better. Try and avoid dangling earrings and try to stick with metal or studs earrings. When in doubt, timeless and classic pieces will always add a touch of elegance to your headshot!

What Should I Wear for My Photoshoot for Headshots?

It is well known that what clothing you decide to wear to your headshot photoshoot will have an impact within your corporate network and how others perceive you. Most people will see your photo and form an opinion of you before they even meet you.

Depending on your industry the dress attire for your headshot photography session will vary. For example, if you are a lawyer or an accountant, a more formal look will look more appropriate. If you are in a creative industry, your dress attire may be less formal. You can always dress smart casual, especially in a city like Calgary. If you have a branding guide it is important to review to ensure that you are presenting yourself in a consistent manner to your brand identity.

Try to avoid loose fitting clothing and choose to wear clothes you feel confident in. This confidence shows in the images from your headshot photography session.

For men, wearing blazers, trousers or suit jackets and jackets with darker hues will always be appropriate if you are stuck on what to wear. These days ties are optional. Collared shirts that are tighter on the collar are best and won’t distract in the headshots.

For women, wearing professional fitted blouses with jackets are almost always appropriate, and dresses can work, too, depending on the industry and image you are trying to convey. You can wear jewellery and patterned clothing, but just ensure that it is not too over-the-top so that it does not pull the focus away from your headshot.

For men and women, fitted or tailored clothing are generally best for formal business headshots. It is almost always best to avoid worn or pilled clothing, and to avoid clothing with logos (unless they are your own logo!).
